Effective policies to control alcohol and tobacco are a need felt by many agencies in the field of health. Therefore after much debate and controversies, the Parliament of Sri Lanka certified the National Authority on Tobacco and Alcohol Act, on the 29th of August.

Policies on a National level as well as local can be of immense value when creating a positive environment for effective prevention strategies. Such policies exercise control over big multinationals that manufacture, promote, and sell, their products in a way that negates all efforts taken to reduce demand in the communities; specially among children.

The Act provides for the establishment of the National Authority on Tobacco and Alcohol for the purpose of identifying the policies on protecting public health.

Along with this development, in the year 2006, ADIC continued to work by mobilizing and pressurizing the government to strengthen the prevailing policies and to work towards new policies.

The outstanding achievements for 2006 were the practical implementation of the existing smoke free policies in the relevant authorities.
