The interventions carried out within schools aimed to mobilize a group of students to change the existing culture among students in a manner that does not promote drug use. ADIC’s main contribution is the capacity building of technical subjects, updating groups on current issues, exposing of the recruitment efforts of the industries and mobilizing students to take action to change the school culture to benefit their peers.
In the year 2006, interventions were targeted in 19 districts among which direct intervention were carried out in 15 districts among 815 schools and indirect interventions were carried out among 4 districts carrying out 4500 schools. Direct interventions were based on prevention camps, where the schools played a leadership role in organizing and finding the necessary resources for these camps. Indirect interventions were based on distance mode interventions such as using materials, letters and leaflets.
Developing capacities of teachers in support of school based prevention
Teacher trainings were offered to 2400 teachers cover most of the districts. Prevention aides such as modules, posters and leaflets were developed and distributed to these teachers. The expected outcomes from these programmes were that these teachers would support the students to intervene and capacity build their peers and thereby help to reduce initiation within these schools. At a minimum level it was expected that these teachers would guide the students in carrying out counter productive interventions
Collaborations with International Youth Organizations
The ADIC also had collaborative efforts with Hirday-Shan, India. A team of 5 students participated on the global event, GYM 2006 in India organized by Hirday-Shan. Here the students shared their experiences on drug prevention strategies with other youths present in the training.
